Billboard 100 Most Powerful People in the Music Biz

Here Are The 100 Most Powerful People In The Music Biz

Billboard has released the 2012 Power 100 list, which ranks the 100 most powerful people in the music industry, and it reveals that times are changing!

No longer are the record labels in control, instead power is shifting to the artists, their managers, and the people who book them.

One top entertainment attorney who was consulted to create the list said:

"Ultimately the artists are in control. So whoever most influences the artist has the power. But the label role has diminished as they no longer can provide the established artists with as much cash as they used to."

Jay-Z, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, U2, Jon Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga are the 6 artists on the list, while there were just 21 record labels executives, but 23 managers and 10 television and movie executives. The rest of the names come from radio, music publishing, digital service providers, branding companies, trade groups, lawyers and even 2 venture capitalists.

Perez Hilton isn't there yet, but give us a couple more years! LOLz!

Hugh McDonald: the man behind the Bon Jovi bass

We never hear about Hugh so when I saw this article there was no question it would make it to the blog today.....

Arts & Entertainment | January 27, 2012
Hugh McDonald: the man behind the Bon Jovi bass

Hugh McDonald has to be the most humble musician in rock n' roll.

He is the rhythmic definition of rock and roll cool: nary a beat is there that he can’t keep, from the driving bass line of “Keep The Faith” or the sensual hip sway tub thumping of “One Wild Night”. Cool and confident, content to be the most Unfamous Unofficial band member of New Jersey’s own Bon Jovi. He’s low key and exudes class; indeed, bassist Hugh McDonald is the ultimate hired gun.

A native of Philadelphia, McDonald has been dealing heartbeat bass grooves for Bon Jovi since the band’s inception. He played bass on the original demo tape for “Runaway”, and was a member of The All-Star Review, the collection of studio musicians who crafted “Bon Jovi”, the band’s debut LP.

Other players included guitarist Tim Pierce, keyboardist Roy Bittan (of the E Street Band), drummer Frankie LaRocka, and singers David Grahmme and Mick Seeley.

Though not originally recruited to play bass for the final lineup that would become Bon Jovi---Richie Sabora on guitar, David Bryan on keyboards, Alec Jon Such on bass and Tico Torres on drums---McDonald replaced Jon Such when he left the band after the release of 1994’s "Crossroad" album.

In addition to playing on numerous Bon Jovi studio albums and touring extensively around the world with the band, McDonald was also a member of the Dave Bromberg Band, and has recorded with Alice Cooper, Willie Nelson, Richie Sambora, Steve Goodman, Ringo Starr, Jon Bon Jovi, Lita Ford, Michael Bolton, Cher, and Ricky Martin among others.

Laid back and with cool looks that make him look like he and actor James Spader were separated at birth, McDonald must be incredibly secure in his own talent and place in the universe to not push the issue of ‘official membership’ in Bon Jovi.

At times he must certainly feel like the Carlo character from The Godfather---the one who marries Michael Corleone’s sister Connie---he’s in the family, but technically he’s not.

“Give him a decent living, but don’t ever let him in on the family’s business” is a Vito Corleone quote that refers to Carlo, but could just as easily have been uttered by Jon Bon Jovi.

Like a mafia family protecting the original inner circle, the band members never ‘officially’ replaced Jon Such; rather, they filled their need by simply hiring another session musician, a known quantity, hard worker, and someone who wouldn’t whine about not being ‘with the band’.

Official or not, Hugh McDonald is no fool.

In a music industry that chews up and spits out acts new and old as fast as the cultural whims shift the style and nature of the entertainment, Bon Jovi has endured far longer than anyone on MTV or FM radio could have predicted back when they hit the scene in 1983.

Hell, most musicians are glad if they can get a paying gig or two; McDonald has had a pretty good run with a steady job in one of the world’s best bands for decades.

Nor is McDonald one-dimensional.

His Discography is nothing short of a 'Who’s Who' of incredible talent he has played with during the course of his career, and clearly serves as an official set of papers for a blue-blood musical pedigree that requires nothing but to play for the love of music; to feel the incidental weight of a Carvin bass slung high on a hip and rumbling low against a tummy while lending drive to a universe of music that knows no bounds nor in which it can be contained.

Good work if you can find it, and Hugh McDonald has, and does!

Yesterday Richie signed a guitar and Nikki signed it as well for a little girl, Desiree that we take care of every once in a while. She has cancer and is luckily in remission, all she wanted for her 14th birthday was something signed by Rich and Nikki, So Richie and Nikki decided on a guitar! This is Richie in studio with the guitar for little Desiree.

A little something different from my normal posts regarding Bon Jovi but this is something very dear to my heart. I too have MS but I like to think of myself as one of the lucky ones. I to can still walk and talk and go to the beach. As a favorite guitarist said in an interview this past year regarding what he likes to do in his spare time..... "Beach,Beach,Beach. Tico Tores interview

Interview with Rock Star Dad Tico Torres
By Kristin | Published: December 15, 2011

Today The Little Style File is thrilled to have an interview with Rock Star Dad, Tico Torres! You know Tico as the drummer for Bon Jovi and the creator of the always stylish baby line Rock Star Baby. We asked Tico about everything from dad style to bedtimes, here is what he had to say…

tico torres

TLSF: When did the concept of Rock Star Baby first develop?

TICO: Rock Star Baby first started in 2000, then later revamped and released in Europe and USA in 2009.
TLSF: How were you able to maintain your rock star style after becoming a parent?
TICO: Being a musician is a life style and labor of love, like any other profession it has it ups and downs, For me it’s being away from my son… I’ve always tried to not let the celeb lifestyle envelope my life.

TLSF: What is your favorite fatherhood moment?
TICO: Everyday I see something in my child that makes me proud!
TLSF: What are your must have baby/kid items?
TICO: A must have, is my first born baby sets… all the clothing should be of best quality and easy to put on and take off.

TLSF: How does your son influence your style?
TICO: In my eyes, Kids are naturally cool, they are pretty perceptive to there surroundings. When a new style comes out i like to ask my son if he likes it or not..
TLSF: What are your fashion tips for dads?
TICO: The reason for starting RSB is so dads can have a place to shop for the kids, ”Its totally a man friendly line.”

TLSF: The Little Style File knows that kids have their own sense of style – how do you influence your child’s style?
TICO: By exposing my son to what I believe is cool. Kids develop there style via there parents manner of dress.
TLSF: What is your favorite thing to do with your son?
TICO: Painting pictures together and fishing.

TLSF: We have to know – what is the bedtime for a rock star’s son?
TICO: 8 PM Sharp!!!
Thank you, Mr. Torres! To learn more about Tico Torres and Rock Star Baby, click here or visit RockStarBaby.com.

Memphis writter Keeps the Upbeat

'Memphis' writer keeps the upbeat

PAUL KOLNIK
Felicia Boswell and Bryan Fenkart in "Memphis," opening Tuesday at the Academy of Music in its national tour. The Tony-winning musical is based on disc jockey Dewey Phillips, who in the 1950s was one of the first white DJs to play black music.

When David Bryan phones from a stage in Houston, the Bon Jovi keyboardist isn't calling to discuss his band's tour updates or studio news.

He's not giving love a bad name. He's not talking about Slippery When Wet, Richie Sambora, or other topics typically Bon Jovi.

The New Jersey native who started playing with Jon Bon Jovi when the singer still used his given name "John Bongiovi" (Bryan's real last name is Rashbaum) is in the Lone Star State, readying a theatrical production of The Toxic Avenger, his second musical stage pairing with playwright/novelist Joe DiPietro.

Their first? Memphis, the Tony-winning, rocking romantic tale loosely based on disc jockey Dewey Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play black music in the 1950s.

Now on its first tour, Memphis opens at the Academy of Music on Tuesday and runs through Jan. 22.

Among other prizes, the show won four Tonys in 2010, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Score, and Best Orchestrations.

Bryan is "amped" that Philly (a home away from home when Bon Jovi recorded 1985's 7800° Fahrenheit at Philly's Warehouse studio) finally gets a chance to experience his rocking historical musical. "The touring production is a testament to what Memphis is on Broadway, where it's been for three years and almost 1,000 shows. Honestly, we're just so upbeat about it."

Being upbeat is a big part of being David Bryan. Fellow Jersey native DiPietro, famed for writing book and lyrics for I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change (the second-longest-running Off Broadway musical) says in a phone interview that there's an optimism about Bryan that you don't usually find in theater folk. "Most of them are pretty tragic and pessimistic," adds DiPietro, laughing. "Then again, maybe David's optimistic because he's had people screaming at him in adoration his whole life. Who knows?"

After calling himself the "ultimate optimist," Bryan (who will turn 50 in February) proves as much when discussing the forlorn finale of Memphis, "Steal Your Rock 'n' Roll." Though it's about one character's rise and another's fall, Bryan says that through everything, the ill-fated character "stuck to his dreams no matter what - that's the person I am."

The person Bryan is learned to play trumpet at age 5 when his father, horn man Eddie Rashbaum, taught young David the intricacies of his craft. "He led me down the path of music," recalls Bryan, who eventually learned to play violin, clarinet, and piano before hooking up with Bon Jovi. "Jon and I have been playing together since I was 161/2, and honestly it's been a pretty long, fun ride," says the keyboardist who worked in cover bands with the vocalist before forming Bon Jovi. Bryan has penned a fleeting few songs for the pop-metal act including the fan favorite "In These Arms."

When Bon Jovi went on hiatus between 1990 and 1992, Bryan started considering options. He started work on a solo album, the prog-jazzy On a Full Moon that came out in 1995 (a second solo effort, Lunar Eclipse, was released in 2000) and composed the film score to 1992's Netherworld. In 2001, the "script gods" came calling when an agent sent Bryan, a theater novice, a request for an authentic score for a musical love story, an interracial one, with the birth of rock-and-roll at its core.

"It wasn't just music-for-entertainment's-sake," says Bryan. "The story mattered. It's history. Plus, I knew as soon as I read the script that I wanted to make the band a horn ensemble. I played that soul sound growing up."

DiPietro says that although he knew many talented theater composers, he was looking for a rocker to collaborate on Memphis. "[Bryan] called out of the blue and said, 'I'm David Bryan from Bon Jovi. I just got your script. I want to know how I could write the music,' " DiPietro recalls. "He seemed like a good guy, so I told him to send me something." Figuring a rock guy would take weeks to dispatch music, DiPietro was astounded to receive a burned CD the next morning. "I listened to it once and hoped that David wasn't crazy, because he was the guy," he says.

Bryan had been so enthused by DiPietro's words that he had run into his New Jersey home studio, plugged in the drum machine, sang lead and background vocals, and layered in half a dozen instruments. When DiPietro called, Bryan told him, "Yeah, I am a little crazy, but I'd still take the gig."

After several tryouts with new teams of producers and designers, Memphis debuted during the 2003-04 season in Massachusetts and California and opened on Broadway in October 2009. Nothing about the Broadway staging of Memphis has changed for its touring run, says Bryan. "That final production works because we ran out of wrong things to do," he explains with a laugh.

Meanwhile, the collaboration between rock guy and writer goes on. Not only are they testing out The Toxic Avenger ("The feel-goo musical of the year," proclaims its tag line) in Houston for a hopeful run at Broadway in 2012, they are at work on a musical, featuring all original songs, about the tunesmiths who worked in Broadway's famous Brill Building. DiPietro and Bryan hope to see that effort hit Broadway in 2013.

DiPietro says that the pair's similar ages, Jersey roots, like-minded mothers ("his is Jewish, mine's Italian") and laid-back manners make them a good team. "I've never been in a writing situation where the other person isn't spinning and screaming all the time," says DiPietro. "David isn't that." Nor does Bryan have much of an ego, according to DiPietro, who can tell you stories about rockers who've tried to write musicals and failed.

What DiPietro loves most about Bryan is that the keyboardist writes bright, authentic rock that's inherently theatrical. Music in the theater has to come over the footlights. "David writes with the richness of emotion that the theater requires, whether he knows it or not," says DiPietro.

Bryan knows it. Whether it's an oozing, green, toxic superhero or Memphis disc jockeys and soul shouters, Bryan is confident of his ability to make songs happen and put emotions onto a stage.

"I know how to whip an audience into a frenzy and how to build that up from beginning to end because I've been doing that with Jon [Bon Jovi] since we were kids," says Bryan with a laugh. "I know all the tricks of rock-and-roll, and I use them all in Memphis."

Bon Jovi The Circle Tour

January 11, 2012-

Singer Jon Bon Jovi took some time to post an updated fan letter on January 10, 2012 via Facebook just to keep fans in 'The Circle' of all of the latest band and members pesonal doings since taking their break from the road last fall.

Following a nasty December where Jon was the victim of a a cruel, and infantile celebrity death hoax Jon posted the following letter yesterday to Bon Jovi fans;

Greetings to all. Happy 2012! I hope everyone had a fine holiday and that you're all ready for what we hope will be an exciting 2012.

Since we spoke last I've been informed that over 15 million Bon Jovi followers are out there monitoring our activities. Thanks. Considering we're not actively touring and don't have a record out that is amazing. The Circle Tour was beyond our wildest dreams. 4 million of you saw the tour and made us the biggest tour on the planet in 2010 and #2 in 2011... it's only fair we let some of the other bands have some of your attention in 2012 but don't worry, we are writing up a storm and have a really good record coming together. Richie and the guys are all happy and healthy. At least that's what they tell me...

Thanks for the posts regarding my blogged demise. As I write this I am very much alive but I died online December 19th, 2011 and it was a wild 60 minutes. Fortunately my family was all together when the calls came in and we quickly dispelled the rumors. Besides all the well wishes 'dying' is soooo overrated. We all have so much to live for so make the best of each day.

In 2012, I look forward to the Soul Kitchen helping those who in these difficult financial times need help from their neighbors. Remember, a helping hand up is not a hand out. Empowering your neighbor is not entitling them. You'd be surprised how many people today are either in need or on the verge of economic assistance. WE have the power to make a difference. Find something or someone that moves you... you can make a difference and I promise it will make you and that neighbor in need feel something magical. Don't fall into the negative. Don't assume the press or those in the media know better or know more. Follow YOU. Partisanship, is just ignorance in disguise.

Ok, enough of my thoughts. It's time to go to work. I'll fill you in on any one off shows like Bamboozle in Asbury Park as the dates come together. Until then root for your favorite team, who ever that may be and look out for your favorite band, we know who that should be.
See you round... JBJ

Thanks for the news Jon, and the 15 million Bon Jovi fans would like you to know, your hard work and dedication doesn't go unnoticed. We will all anxiously be awaiting the arrival of your new album, and as for your next tour... fans are stating that if you were happy with your 2011 tour numbers, then you will be ecstatic over the next one as they plan to blow those numbers out of the water, until then enjoy your down time guys you have earned it!

Memphis Q and A with David Bryan

Jan 6, 2012
Memphis Composer Q&A- David Bryan

MEMPHIS Composer Q & A
DAVID BRYAN

You have been with the rock group Bon Jovi for more than 25 years. What do you think is the key to the band’s continued popularity?
Writing good songs, making good records, and always giving your all at every live concert.

How did you and Joe DiPietro meet and when did you begin collaborating on MEMPHIS?
I got Joe’s script from an agent and when I read it, I immediately loved the story and I heard all the music in my head. I know that last part sounds a little crazy, but what’s there now on stage is what I heard. I called up Joe and introduced myself, and when we got together it was magic. We work very well together. Joe is a great collaborator.

What attracted you to write the musical MEMPHIS?
The story. It’s an epic American tale about the birth of rock & roll, I just love that we not only portray one of the first white DJ’s to integrate the radio, but we also dramatize an interracial love story (when it was against the law in many states to have a interracial marriage). Ultimately, it’s a story about how music helped bring about social change, and how this music helped bring people together.

During all the years it took for MEMPHIS to get to Broadway. What compelled you to continue with the process?
It’s not a sprint but a marathon! Every time we did a production, we worked on the show and we learned where it was and where we had to take it. A musical is very complicated. You have to create story, songs, and dance, and they all have to work together. The fine tuning process happens in front of an audience and that takes many, many hours to get right. But it was easy to persist, because I always believed that MEMPHIS is a show that entertains and tells an important American story.

How is writing song for a rock band different than writing songs for a Broadway musical?
In a rock band, you’re just writing for the voice of the lead singer. In a musical, you have many different characters you have to make sing. Still ultimately, a good song is a good song.

How did you get involved with writing the music for the off-Broadway hit, Toxic Avenger?
Joe called me up with the idea. We were on a break from MEMPHIS, so we started to write Toxic Avenger. We began it as a bit of a lark, but it kept getting funnier and better and we wound up writing a show that audiences really seem to love.

Can you describe why Broadway musicals are so difficult to write? There are so many parts and it takes a lot of time to get them to work together. And you have to get it right before you get to Broadway. Joe and I work like crazy to make sure it’s a good as we can make it. With MEMPHIS, we put together a great creative team and we had the good fortune of working with great producers. And in the end we have a multiple award-winning show because of it. But man, we worked hard.

Who were your influences in writing the rock score for MEMPHIS?
I grew up playing in clubs with bands that played those Memphis-influenced songs, so it was in my blood. It was a very special time in music.

Name some of your favorite ‘50s songs and why they are your favorites?
There are too many songs to name., but I am always struck by how much joy and hope there is in that music. It was the beginning of social change in America - and music was at the forefront.

You have won many honors as a rock musician, including winning a Grammy Award. How was the Tony® awards presentation different than the Grammy Awards?
The three Tony® awards I won is unbelievably special. It was a long road with MEMPHIS, but I always believed in our show. To be honored and welcomed by the Broadway community for my work feels great. And it is just the start. Joe and I have a new show in the works called Chasing The Song (about American song writers from 1962-1964). We’ll continue to create new works for a long time.

Have you always been a fan of Broadway musicals? If so, what’s your favorite musical?
I didn’t see a lot of musicals growing up. I saw Fiddler on the Roof and really liked it. The songs and the stories were interwoven perfectly.

Have members of Bon Jovi seen MEMPHIS? If so, what was the reaction to your music and the show?
Yes they have. They LOVED the show.

As you were writing the score did you play the music for the other members of Bon Jovi, to get their feedback?
No I didn’t. I wanted to wait for them to see it on Broadway.

Can you describe a most enjoyable part of writing a Broadway musical?
There are so many phases a show goes through and I love them all. It starts with Joe and me in a room, then we add actors for a reading, then we add a director, choreographer and creative team to put a production on stage. Then we’ll try out the show with a few out-of-town productions before we bring it to Broadway. And all this time, we’re constantly tinkering with every aspect of the show. We don’t stop until we feel we’ve gotten it right. Or, as I like to say, until we no longer feel as if we’ve gotten anything wrong.

Why do you think fans of rock and roll, people who might have never even seen a Broadway musical, would love MEMPHIS?
It’s an important American story that celebrates what we have in common as human beings rather then what separates us. And it ROCKS!

What new musical are you and MEMPHIS collaborator, Joe DiPietro, working on now?
Joe and I have a new original show in the works called Chasing The Song. It’s about American songwriters from 1962-1964 based on the songwriters who worked in the Brill Building. It’s a fictional story about factual America. We’ve already written a bunch of songs and have a great script. We’re at the beginning where it’s just Joe and me in the room, but soon we’ll be ready to get to the next stage of development. We’re looking forward to creating and building a brand new work.

Wordless Wednesday: In the Recording Studio with the Broadway Cast of MEMPHIS

Wordless Wednesday returns with a behind-the-scenes look at David Bryan (Award-winning keyboard player and founding member of Bon Jovi) in the recording studio with the Broadway cast of MEMPHIS. Bryan wrote the music/lyrics for MEMPHIS, which won the 2010 Tony Award® for Best Musical. Bryan and Joe DiPietro (Book/Lyrics) won the Tony Award® for Best Score.

Of the experience inside the recording studio, Bryan said, “I’ve made a lot of albums but this one is really special to me. MEMPHIS is about the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, and to go into a studio with our amazing cast and kick-ass band is something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time.”

MEMPHIS takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated ’50s when a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun (Bryan Fenkart) fell in love with everything he shouldn’t: rock ‘n’ roll and an electrifying black singer named Felicia (Felicia Boswell). MEMPHIS is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music changed forever.

MEMPHIS is now playing through Sunday, Jan. 8, at Ovens Auditorium. CLICK HERE for more information.

Bongiovi finds spot for Soul Kitchen
March 3, 2011 By triCityNews

RED BANK - Now this is the type of stuff that Hip City should be celebrating.

Dorothea Bongiovi - along with her partner in restaurant adventure Zeet Peabody - just made a big step forward in a Red Bank story we first reported about last year.

They've found a permanent space for the JBJ Soul Kitchen. Dorothea told us a lease has been signed for a building on Monmouth Street between Shrewsbury Avenue and the train station. An application is in the process of being filed with the Borough for a restaurant seating 26-30 in this approximately 1050 square foot space.

The Soul Kitchen will allow anyone to enjoy a meal. Suggested donation will be $10 per person. Customers who cannot afford to pay will have an opportunity to work at the restaurant. Thus everyone at the Soul Kitchen will be treated equally - because everyone there knows that they provided for themselves.

It's a great and empowering concept. And Bongiovi has a vision even beyond that.

She also sees the Soul Kitchen as a job training and community center. And there will be an organic garden providing food for the restaurant on the sizable empty space in front of the building, which was a three-bay auto-repair garage. It's a pretty ugly spot right now. A large organic garden would be excellent community beautification.

The vision gets even bigger. What Bongiovi wants to build in Red Bank will be a template for community activists to open JBJ Soul Kitchens around the country and abroad. The interest is out there. Dorothea said inquiries were received from all over after her husband Jon Bon Jovi mentioned the Soul Kitchen on appearances with Ellen DeGeneres and Larry King.

This is also where Zeet Peabody comes in. Zeet was the owner and chef of the renowned Bistro Zeeto in Atlantic Highlands. He then became a personal chef and restaurant consultant. He is the consultant advising Dorothea on this project. The two have worked together for years.

It's an excellent collaboration. The two have held Soul Kitchen Sunday Suppers for the past two years, first at Saint Anthony's Church and then at Lunch Break, both in Red Bank. It was the same concept for people to pay or come back later and work. They've served approximately 2,000 meals so far.

When we reported on the Soul Kitchen at Lunch Break in December, many volunteers were helping out. Dorothea herself worked the door, while her father-in-law - Mr. B, as she calls him - was in the kitchen and her daughter was waiting tables. Apparently, when husband Jon attended the previous time he helped with dishes.

So now Bongiovi and Peabody are ready for their next step after two years of practice. After municipal approvals are received, the Soul Kitchen will become a full service restaurant open four days a week for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. Dorothea would like to see it expanded to five days a week once it gets going.

"I still feel very strongly about this project", Bongiovi said. "People need to feel they have a place to go. A place where people ask how you are. It's all about fellowship, and it's empowering for people to know they've earned their meal just like everyone else".

A few other interesting points about this story:

First, we like the potential for Red Bank itself. The restaurant with its progressive concepts will bring excellent publicity to the town. It will help in the transformation that we seek for Red Bank into a much more broad-minded and alternative place.

Many up in Red Bank's business community are looking in admiration at our increasingly vibrant Asbury Park. The triCitNews was a major part of that transformation. We can tell you it was accomplished by attracting and valuing people and things that are non-conformist and different then that rest of suburban Monmouth County.

In that regard, Red Bank has all the elements in place to be an equal partner with Asbury Park in transforming the triCity region of Monmouth County into a suburban area like no other. A place where the arts, culture and broad-minded thought are ascendant.

TriCity has long cited Red Bank's cultural assets - the Count Basie, the Two River Theater and the Clearview art house movie theater - as examples of what Hip City offers. More importantly, Red Bank also has a surprisingly large population of artistic and progressive people up there.

The JBJ Soul Kitchen fits right into all that. Imagine if Dorothea and Zeet not only make it a local success, but meet the goal of exporting the concept all over. The result would likely mean Red Bank would be the headquarters of the effort. That's great stuff. This is how you build a great little city, and region.

Those from all over the country, and world, would visit Red Bank for information and/or training on the JBJ Soul Kitchen program. Same with journalists who'd come to write about it.

All would be exposed to what Red Bank - and the area - have to offer. That's the type of stuff that's so important. That's house you leverage the strength of our progressive and creative people - like Dorothea Bongiovi, her husband Jon and Zeet Peabody - into transforming Red Bank and the region. Even better, in this case it involves a project with tons of potential to do tons of good. Now the other point about all this: Dorothea and Zeet need to make the Soul Kitchen a successful enterprise. It must break even.

Look, everyone knows that Dorothea and Jon could write the check for this place to subsidize it forever. But that's not the point. The idea here is to prove it can be a self-sustaining non-profit so it can be replicated elsewhere.

That's why Dorothea said Zeet will be looking for donations, or dramatically reduced prices, of kitchen equipment in excellent or good condition. Same with contractors and others who can donate their services.

It's important to remember here that Dorothea and Jon have donated and raised large sums for social service organizations all over the country to help provide the basics of food, housing and medical care for those in need. They'll no doubt continue to do so. Locally, they've supported the Monmouth County Food Bank and Red Bank's Lunch Break, among many other groups.

The Soul Kitchen serves a different type of need. It's to allow people who have the ability to work to have a nice meal at a restaurant, regardless of their current economic situation. That's about empowerment and pride. And the fellowship among all the customers benefits everyone in many ways.

And those who choose to work at the Soul Kitchen can potentially learn job skills in the kitchen (or perhaps the organic garden). That's certainly of value in the worst economy since the Great Depression.

Anyone who wants to get involved with the Soul Kitchen can best reach them via email at info@jbjsoulfoundation.org. The plan is to continue the afternoon Sunday meals (seatings at 1pm and 2pm) at Lunch Break in Red Bank through March. Call 732-747-8577 if you'd like to attend one. Bongiovi is hopeful that work on the new site can begin in April if the municipal approvals are received in time. She and Peabody will then be concentrating on that.

Back in December when we interviewed Dorothea, it was clear she wanted the permanent location for the Soul Kitchen in Red Bank. Now she found one.

"It's the community I know the best", she told us. "Red Bank has the balance we need for this project between people who can sustain it and people in need."

Richie Recording next album

Love the last line of this article!!!
December 30, 2011

Bon Jovi fans the world over are waiting with baited breath for the blue-eyed wonder of New Jersey to finish his charitable activities and his family vacations like his recent sojourn to St. Bartz with the Bongiovi kit-and-caboodle and get back in the studio and work on any kind of record to fill the terminal void of the band being off the road.

Never one to wait around patiently, it appears reliable ax-man Richie Sambora has beaten blue-eyes to the punch.

According to published reports, fans won’t need to wait too long to find out where ‘Mr. Bluesman’ is playing these days, because the brown-eyed pup with the ‘What who me?” smile is back in the studio laying down tracks for this third solo record.

Lending credence to the phrase ‘Idle time is the Devil’s time’, the recently rehabbed and reconciled rocker has been prolific, playing solo gigs for charity like the south Florida 13th Annual Biker’s Bash in Hollywood, Florida followed up with a show at the Seminole Indian Hard Rock Casino in mid-December.

Interviewed at the time by WSVN-7’s ‘Shireen On The Scene’, Sambora dropped a hint that was recently confirmed by Gibson.com when asked what he had been doing since the band came off their 18-month world tour.

“John and I are recording at the moment. I’m also recording a solo album at the moment , and writing so I’m in this creative process. I’ve written 35 songs in the last two-and-a-half months…or something like that”.

Thirty-five songs is enough to make Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora fans bust out the heart-and-dagger lobster bibs to catch all the lascivious drool sure to drop at the thought of all that music and all those future tour dates!

Gibson.com reported Sambora is working with Luke Ebbin, who worked on the Bon Jovi CD’s Crush and Bounce. No slouch is Mr. Ebbin, having not only worked with Bon Jovi, but also Melissa Etheridge, Plain White T’s, the All-American Rejects, and Will I Am, to name just a few.

Ebbin told Broadcast Newsroom , “Richie came off the Bon Jovi tour energized and we got together to write a couple of songs. The results were very good, so we kept writing more and decided to go in and record them.

“The recordings came out great, so Richie decided why not make this a solo record? There are eight songs in the can now, including a co-write with Bernie Taupin...”

Undoubtedly, fans the world over will have many a sleepless night wondering whether new tunes will feature a mellowing of the defiant wisdom of a “Ballad of Youth” from Sambora’s first solo foray in 1991 'Stranger In This Town'; or be more closely aligned with all he has lived and learned since penning “Undiscovered Soul’ in 1998.

In the 14 years since his last solo record, Sambora has lived, loved, lost, and found it all again, which can only mean an even richer treasure trove of material awaits.
