Memphis on Television This Friday night

Tony Winning musical on tv Friday night

Attention fans of musical theater: Broadway's 2010 Tony Award-Winning Best Musical Memphis  captured live-in-performance at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre and in high definition is headed to our television screens on WNET/THIRTEEN’s Great Performances on Friday, February 24 at 9 p.m.
Tony® nominees Chad Kimball and Montego Glover lead the original cast in a story of forbidden love and the early days of rock and roll.
Memphis is the historic first Best Musical Tony Award winner to air on U.S. national television with its original principals while simultaneously continuing a successful Broadway run and national tour.
Memphis was the winner of four Tony Awards® including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book and Best Orchestrations.
"Memphis takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated 50's, where a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun (Kimball) falls in love with everything he shouldn't: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer Felicia Farrell (Glover). Memphis is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music changed forever."

The show’s Tony®-winning original score features music by Bon Jovi’s founding member and keyboardist David Bryan and lyrics by Bryan and Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change), who also pens the musical’s book. . The show is based on a concept by the late George W. George (producer of the Tony nominated Bedroom Farce and the film My Dinner With Andre), with direction by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley (Xanadu) and choreography by Sergio Trujillo, (Jersey Boys, Next to Normal).
The critically acclaimed production of Memphis won a total of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score (David Bryan and Joe DiPietro), Best Book (Joe DiPietro), and Best Orchestrations (David Bryan and Daryl Waters). Memphis is currently in its 3rd smash year on Broadway, delighting audiences nightly at the Shubert Theatre (225 West 44th Street).

New Valentine's Day Survey: Jon Bon Jovi Is Sexiest Man in Music

Facebook.com/JonBonJoviWomen have known for the past 25 years that Jon Bon Jovi is among the sexiest men in music, but a new poll reveals that he's actually #1.
TouchTunes, the company that runs digital jukeboxes in bars and restaurants, conducted its third annual Valentine's Day Love Survey and found that 29 percent of women found Jon to be the sexiest man in music, outranking Usher with 26 percent, The Voice coach Blake Shelton with 24 percent and Justin Timberlake with 21 percent.
The poll also found that the majority of men surveyed ranked Rihanna the sexiest woman in music, while Americans older than forty ranked Jennifer Lopez to be the sexiest.  And the song that the majority of those polled thought best described their sex lives?  "Amazing" by Seal.  Wonder how Heidi Klum feels about that.

Greenbrier Ticket Prices

Bon Jovi to play Greenbrier Glassic 2012

5:30 p.m.
In just the two years since it began, the Greenbrier Classic has built a strong reputation with the PGA.  So much so, it was recently recognized as 'best in class' by the association for their concert series.

But Greenbrier owner Jim Justice says the bar can still be raised.

"When we started, I said I won't stop until you come to me and say, 'your tournament is the best,'" Justice told a crowd gathered to hear who would be coming to sing during the 2012 golf tournament.

Justice believes he's even closer to that goal this year.

"We're just really excited, that's all there is to it," Justice excalimed.

The excitement stems from the star-studded lineup, starting with country star Toby Keith on the 4th of July.

"I don't know that we could have a more patriotic act on the 4th of July than Toby Keith," Justice stated.

Two and three days after Keith, rock and R&B legends will take the stage.  Rod Stewart and Lionel Richie get the Friday night slot on July 6th.  Then on Saturday, July 7th, Bon Jovi will play the final concert for the event.

"We wanted to knock it out of the park," Justice exclaimed.

But this year's event won't just be about bringing the biggest stars in.  The resort is also hoping to put the next big thing out.  Justice also announced a national talent competition called 'Greenbrier's Got Country Class.'

"We're going to find maybe the next new country star, and he's gonna have a shot, or they're gonna have a shot as a group, or she's gonna have a shot, and they're gonna open for Toby Keith," Justice pledged.

The contest winner will also receive a recording contract from The Greenbrier.  Auditions will take place in both in West Virginia and Nashville.

And what would a golf tournament be, without the professional golfers?  Justice said it's still too early to announce the field, but that organizers have contacted Tiger Woods, along with other big name PGA stars.

"We're sure getting a lot of looks.  It wouldn't surprise me, in fact I know the field will be better.  And the field was great last year," Justice said proudly.

The tournament will run from July 2-8th, and Justice promises it will be one for the history books.

Person to Person Transcript

"Person to Person": Jon Bon Jovi

(CBS News)  Jon Bon Jovi grew up a working-class kid in New Jersey. Today he's one of the most successful artists in music history

Special section: "Person to Person"

Bon Jovi fills stadiums with his fans and sells albums by the millions... yet he's a down-to-earth family man and dedicated philanthropist. He's still in Jersey... but across the river in Red Bank now, and has a slightly bigger house. Lara Logan and Charlie Rose go "Person to Person" with Jon Bon Jovi.

CHARLIE ROSE: Hey, Jon.
JON BON JOVI: Hello, America, come on in. (LAUGHS) Hi, Charlie. Hi, Lara.
CHARLIE ROSE: This is Charlie Rose. Lara Logan is with me. Where are we?
JON BON JOVI: This is our -- humble abode in beautiful New Jersey. ...and welcome to it. I'm gonna show you guys around.
CHARLIE ROSE: How long have you lived here?
JON BON JOVI: Wow, let's see. We got the land in 1995, designed and built the house and moved in in '99.

LARA LOGAN: (GASPS)
JON BON JOVI: So it's been -- 13 years that we've been in. This is the formal living room. I'll give you a little bit of a look-see.

This is -- well, a bunch of family portraits, my family, Dorothea of course, that's Romeo, our youngest, that's Stephanie, Jacob and Jesse, the kids--
LARA LOGAN: So you have four kids?
JON BON JOVI: Four kids, same wife.(LAUGHS) That's my folks...
LARA LOGAN: Those are your parents?
JON BON JOVI: Yeah, yeah, my dad, John; my mom, Carol.
LARA LOGAN: So I was curious to learn that your parents were both Marines.
JON BON JOVI: True, that's how they met. My mom was -- not only a Marine, she was-- a Playboy bunny and uh...(LAUGHS) So I'm the product of two Marines.

CHARLIE ROSE: We're in the living room and -- and this is where the family comes together. Where do you watch television?
JON BON JOVI: Well, we don't necessarily watch a lot of television. But what happens here in this house is -- we watch a lot of movies. So it's a 35 millimeter projectionist that we keep hidden behind a tapestry.
The tapestry comes down & the giant TV screen rises out of the floor
JON BON JOVI: It's a little more than a TV. (LAUGHS)
CHARLIE ROSE: That's a TV, isn't it !
LARA LOGAN: That's pretty amazing.
JON BON JOVI: So we screen whatever's in theaters here. Yeah, it's good fun.
LARA LOGAN: Do make your children watch your own movies?
JON BON JOVI: Yeah, (LAUGHS) only when they're bad, only when they're in trouble.
CHARLIE ROSE: Take me to the place where you keep your awards.
JON BON JOVI: In this room, this is where I guess you'd call the office. This is where I come sometimes to write, sometimes to play, just sometimes to keep memories around, little gifts that people have given me or awards. ...Here's somethin', for instance. Richie Sambora gave me this, but it's-- it's signed by Bob Dylan. And it was given to me on my birthday.
LARA LOGAN: There's a lot of stuff in this office, Jon.
JON BON JOVI: This one's very, very special.
CHARLIE ROSE: The Songwriters Award.
JON BON JOVI: Yeah, well, The Songwriters Hall of Fame...I mean when you are mentioned in the same kind of breath as so many of the greats that were there before you, uh, it's wonderful. Because any kid who's ever strummed a tennis racket or a broomstick that aspired to be in a band, how many of those were lucky enough to ever make a record deal? How many of those were able to write a song? And how many of those were able to be honored with something like that?
JON BON JOVI: We've been really blessed, Lara. I mean, there's 130 million-plus albums at this point, it's (LAUGHS) that's a lot of platinum discs around the house.
LARA LOGAN: You're still a hard-working musician now, you mentioned being on tour a lot, but that's more than 500 shows just in the last few years alone. You've grossed almost $1 billion at this point

JON BON JOVI: Um, yeah. Hallelujah, amen.
I feel very lucky to be able to do what it is that I love to do and also have the adoration that we get that comes along with it. It's really humbling, it's great.
JON BON JOVI Let me show you around some. Yeah, we'll go down this family hall.
CHARLIE ROSE: Kinda looks like an Oval Office desk, doesn't it?
LARA LOGAN: It does. It does. (LAUGHS)
JON BON JOVI: I have pictures of the boss sitting at that desk...Many a senator has sat at that desk and I have to sit on the side like the assistant whenever they come here.

CHARLIE ROSE: So where are we, Jon?

JON BON JOVI: Well, this is a pass-through hallway to the family wing of the house, but something that we call the 'Herb Ritts' gallery.
LARA LOGAN: So this whole hallway -- is, like, almost a tribute to your family and to your children?
JON BON JOVI: It is. Yeah, it is. ...It's really a special place for us.
CHARLIE ROSE: Is it difficult, with the kind of public presence you have, to be the kind of father you want to be?
JON BON JOVI: Well, it is and it isn't. I mean, look, I -- I miss a lot of birthdays, I've missed a lot of school plays over the years. But then you also have the benefit of having a lot of time off when I'm not on tour, when I'm not makin' a record.
LARA LOGAN: How do you keep it real for them? How do you-- what do you tell them to try and get them to understand how fortunate they are?
JON BON JOVI: You first of all have to lead by example as a parent. Case in point, we're in this beautiful kitchen, we know how blessed we are. But where we spend most of our time these days when we're here at this house is at our community kitchen, The Soul Kitchen.
If you were to come there and you could pay for your meal you do. If you cannot you volunteer. There are no prices on our menus.
CHARLIE ROSE: And it's not just your money. You go there, you work?
JON BON JOVI: Oh sure. I'm the best looking dishwasher, you know, this side of the Mississippi. (LAUGHS)
JON BON JOVI: Let me take you outside.
CHARLIE ROSE: Wow. What's the river?
JON BON JOVI: This is the Navesink River...Just over here over the bridge, that's the Atlantic Ocean.
LARA LOGAN: That's really beautiful.
JON BON JOVI: Yeah, it's great. The estate's 16 acres, it's all waterfront. We have a nice little boat that I -- I really drive poorly.
CHARLIE ROSE: When you were growing up in New Jersey could you ever imagine this?
JON BON JOVI: No (LAUGHS). I don't think any kid ever imagines this.

CHARLIE ROSE: What else is on the property?
JON BON JOVI: There's a lot of -- outer houses on the property.... I'm going to show you a couple of them. One is the recording studio -- if you'd like I'd take you over there--
CHARLIE ROSE: Let's see it.
Boy, this is an incredible house, Jon. We can see it as you walk over to the studio how magnificent this place is.
JON BON JOVI: This is our home-- this is the studio, this is where we've done every record since "Crush."
LARA LOGAN: So is this your commute to work, Jon, a five minute walk from the house?
JON BON JOVI: Exactly, this is it. I pack a lunch and then I get out of the house
JON BON JOVI: This is it, this is where we make the records! This is uh...
LARA LOGAN: Is this hallowed ground for...
JON BON JOVI: ...it really is a world-class studio.
LARA LOGAN: ...Bon Jovi Fans?
JON BON JOVI: (LAUGHS) Yeah, this is our Graceland, right? But, it's very practical because by the time I go to a commercial studio somewhere, it's really freeing to be able to come to a place that's your own.
CHARLIE ROSE: When do you work Jon?
JON BON JOVI: I really am a morning guy. I think a lot of it had to do with these kids. But they get you up anyhow, so I like to start around noontime and--
LARA LOGAN: A morning guy, I like to start around noontime.
CHARLIE ROSE: He's up at the crack of noon.
LARA LOGAN: I hate to break it to you, Jon, but by noon, morning is officially over. (LAUGHS)
JON BON JOVI: Where? No! (LAUGHS)
LARA LOGAN: Jon...is it really true that you're the one that's always been signed with the record company and the other members of the band essentially work for you?
JON BON JOVI: Yeah, but in truth it's -- it's a team effort. It may be my name on the top of the sheet, but these ideas are implemented by a team. So without Richie Sambora, the sound wouldn't be the same. Some of the great collaborations...would not be unless the team were intact. And -- I've been with the same band for nearly, well, it is 30 years this year.
CHARLIE ROSE: What is it you think defines your connection to your fans?
JON BON JOVI: It's hard to say because it's multigenerational. ...But I'd like to think that it's the underlying optimism of the lyric that's brought people together.
CHARLIE ROSE: Think about all the work and all the songs and -- and all that you have done. I mean, where do you put "Living on a Prayer?"
JON BON JOVI: It would have to rank really high. ...people related to those characters.
LARA LOGAN: You're like the anti-rock star, right? There's no drug problems, 32 years married to the same woman, no scandals, no skeletons in your closet, successful --
JON BON JOVI: I couldn't run for political office, let's put it that way.
CHARLIE ROSE: Well said. Suppose you come to this recording studio and you've got an inspiration and you're able to put the song together and you feel great and you want to go have a beer where do you go?
JON BON JOVI: (LAUGHS) We've got that problem solved, too. There are no drunk driving tickets in this perfect -- you know, utopian world in which we live. Lara, come with me if you will.
LARA LOGAN: OK, wait, before you get out of here I am told that there is a photograph from the 80s. I know that fashion-wise, the '80s were not kind to any of us. And as I hear it you were no exception.
CHARLIE ROSE: Where is this photograph?
JON BON JOVI: Alright, there are some pictures along the wall here that date back but this one in particular is a shot that was probably taken around 1980. (LAUGHS) That was me as a young boy -- just startin' off. (LAUGHS)
LARA LOGAN: Can I say you've improved with age Jon?
JON BON JOVI: Well, you're very kind, thank you. But that's -- pretty funny.
CHARLIE ROSE: So you're gonna show us now where we can have a beer if we've had a great day.
JON BON JOVI: I can do that. Come on, I'll take you.
JON BON JOVI: This is trouble, Charlie.
CHARLIE ROSE: All right. I like trouble. (LAUGHS)
JON BON JOVI: It's called The Shoe Inn. This is-- this is a place-- we come and get a beer when we're done recording.
LARA LOGAN: This is quite a pub.
JON BON JOVI: Yeah, this bar came from Paris. I found it in a flea market. It was one piece believe it or not.
LARA LOGAN: Have you had good nights in this place?
JON BON JOVI: Yes, we've had many a good night in this place, but they're all in the memories now.
CHARLIE ROSE: What are you writing about now?
JON BON JOVI: Observations really... There was one I sang in the studio for-- for the cameras the other day called "What About Now."
Bon Jovi sings the lyrics in his studio: "Shout out for the restless and the lonely... Stand up and be proud, what about now..."
JON BON JOVI: Who's gonna finally stand up and be that voice? Who's gonna make that difference?
CHARLIE ROSE: Thank you very much for letting us come share this place-- and this conversation.
JON BON JOVI: Well, I-- I want to thank you both for comin' and-- for lettin' the rest of the country in, as well. (LAUGH)

Leonard Cohen Mentions Bon Jovi!!

Excerpt from Rolling Stone Magazine article:

Leonard Cohen Mentions Bon Jovi!!

Couldn't help it just saw it and i wanted everyone to see what Leonard Cohen said about Bon Jovi in Rolling Stone:

I've heard "Hallelujah" covered by so many singers over the years. Do you have a favorite?

-There's so many fine covers of it. It's all over YouTube, so people will send me their 11-year-old daughter singing it. That's always very charming. And there are great versions of it by k.d. lang. Bon Jovi has a great version of it.

Who Plays Jersey in 2014?

Who Plays Jersey in 2014?

Madonna is playing the halftime show of Super Bowl XLVI Sunday and it's hilarious to hear people whine about this, as if Madonna is going to singlehandedly emasculate professional football in the space of 10 high-heeled minutes. Sorry the NFL won't hire .38 Special to wear hunting camouflage and play in the back of a rusty pickup and give you an appropriately red-blooded halftime thunderclap. But Madonna is a global star, has at least a half-dozen songs everyone knows, and don't pretend you're not going to watch her, because you are. You're even going to hum along to "Holiday." See, you're already doing it. All I had to do was say "Holiday."

But the NFL is running out of suitable geezers for this gig. After the Janet Jackson bosom mishegoss, the NFL got scared of hiring young people, because all young people want to do is take off their clothes, and if you watch television, you know the last thing you ever see on TV is young people taking off their clothes. But after Madonna and the Who and Tom Petty and U2 and Paul McCartney there aren't a lot of graying icons left. Either we have to wait for The Bieber to pass 30 or Roger Goodell is going to have to start widening the net. The Eagles could work. Van Halen, maybe. Fleetwood Mac could be great but they may break up nine times before the show. Zeppelin's never going to do it, sorry. Metallica? Awesome but harsh. You could try and get Pink Floyd to reunite, but, well, yeah. Let's just say you have to pass through a lot of security to get to a Super Bowl and watching Pink Floyd is not as mesmerizing while under the spell of a hot pretzel.
But there is a perfect Super Bowl halftime act out there, and there's a fantastic opening for them down the road, two years from now. New Orleans has next season's Super Bowl, and nobody should tell New Orleans how to book music. They'll handle it. I'm talking about the 2014 Super Bowl: the first ever New York/New Jersey SB, in the Meadowlands, at MetLife Stadium, or whatever they call that fancy doggy dish now. Who should play the New York/New Jersey Super Bowl?
I can already hear you saying "Springsteen." And The Boss would be a legendary, total bullseye; I've said it before. But Springsteen already played a Super Bowl, in 2009, and while he did an excellent job, he appeared to be a little freaked out by the shiny, corporate extravaganza, and it seems unlikely he'd hurry to do another, even in his backyard. Lady Gaga is the biggest pop sensation in the world and a New Yorker, but if you think the L-7 NFL is going to let the unpredictable Gaga within 400 miles of a microphone at the Meadowlands, you are nuts. Billy Joel will get consideration, as will Jay-Z. There's never been a hip-hop halftime headliner, which seems pretty tin-eared and ridiculous. There's always the chance Mr. Carter would bring his wife, and everyone loves Mrs. Carter.

But there is really only one act that totally, utterly makes sense for a high-profile Super Bowl that—let's face it—takes place not in Manhattan, but in the swamp grass and Turnpike exhaust of Jersey. There's one band out there that's synonymous with everything wonderful about that place, that the mere mention of its name brings a pungent, sense-memory whiff of hair spray, Camel Lights and fried dough on the Shore. It's a band that sounds just as good coming out of the plastic speakers of a Camaro as it does from a white limousine, that composed epic anthems which are still screamed at every wedding and prom night from Cape May to Bayonne:
Bon Jovi.
I'm just going to let it settle there, because it's so right and you know it.
Bon Freaking Jovi.
Think about it. It's inarguable. Bon Jovi is a massive Jersey band, with a career that spans decades, and more than 125 million albums sold. They remain one of the biggest touring acts on the planet, up there with U2 and the Stones, and won't shrink with SB pressure—they know how to play a stadium. They actually christened the new Meadowlands joint in the spring of 2010. They're not going to embarrass the league—they've had their fun, but they're a bunch of middle-aged dads.
As far as songs, I'd say break out the acid-washed war horses: "Living on a Prayer," "Wanted Dead or Alive," "You Give Love a Bad Name." Bon Jovi continues to record, but these guys have been to the rodeo. They know how to give the people what they want. They will say yes. They can drive themselves to the show. And they won't complain about the February cold.
Meanwhile, Jon Bon Jovi is a mega football fan—he's tight with Patriots owner Bob Kraft and team Kenobi Bill Belichick, and he was once an owner of the Arena League's Philadelphia Soul. More important, he is alive. Last December, an inane Internet hoax surfaced that the 49-year-old lead singer had passed away. The rumor didn't quit until Bon Jovi posted a smiling photo of himself standing next to a Christmas tree with a handwritten sign that read:
HEAVEN LOOKS A LOT LIKE NEW JERSEY
Two years ago, the NFL decided to take a risk and give the Garden State a winter Super Bowl, and as a certain famous song goes, whooah, we're halfway there. There's only one choice for XLVIII, and it's a no-brainer with fantastic hair. Bon Jovi. Tell Goodell to book it.

Going All in For All Youth

Going All in For All Youth

by Jon Bon Jovi on 2012-01-31 14:10:19
Just over a year ago, President Obama appointed us to serve on the White House Council for Community Solutions alongside 23 other business and community leaders who share a commitment and background in supporting our nation’s youth. Our task: learn about, understand, and recommend community-based solutions to help all young Americans gain access to meaningful employment and relevant education.
This past summer, the two of us — a musician and a PR executive — set out on a listening tour, visiting with young people from Atlanta and New Orleans to Houston and back to our home state of New Jersey. We met with extraordinary young people, whose dedication to overcoming their circumstances was matched only by the passion and caring of the organizations who helped them along the way, offering, as a young woman in Newark told us, “comfort and community” and genuine belonging. We realized that our nation’s greatest untapped natural resource is our next generation. These young men and women represent homegrown talent, ready, willing, and able to be a part of the future; they simply need the outlook, the outlet and the opportunity.
And, importantly, they need opportunities for employment. Although the latest jobs report shows progress made in creating jobs and helping more Americans get back to work, only 45 percent of youth between the ages of 16-24 were employed at the end of August according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Clearly, we need to change that. President Obama took an important step by asking business leaders and communities to join his administration in providing hundreds of thousands of jobs for the youth of America. The White House’s Summer Jobs Plus initiative is a call-to-action for businesses, non-profits, and government to collaborate towards creating employment opportunities for low-income and disconnected youth this coming summer. Summer jobs provide young people a critical on-ramp to the road towards responsibility, community, work ethic, stability and economic self-sufficiency. When combined with support systems and mentorship, summer jobs can change lives.
But we don’t have to wait for summer to begin before we take can action. There are things each of us can do every day — right now — to help. Local businesses can provide paid or unpaid internships reserved specifically for disconnected youth in the community. Educators can work closely with community organizations in identifying students at-risk of disconnecting from education and employment while connecting them with preventive support. Community members can spend one or two hours a week mentoring.
We know this approach can work because we witnessed it during our listening tour happening across hundreds of effective organizations around the nation. One young man in Atlanta told us he was raised by his single mother in a poor neighborhood, without a father to “teach me how to be a man.” He’d been on the honor roll but when the financial bottom dropped out from beneath his family, he dropped out of school to make extra money. Unable to get a job, he turned to crime, landed in juvenile detention, and once he served his time, he found himself right back out on the streets. Another young man in Houston shared with us that he just wanted to be normal, “like your children.” A young woman we met in Atlanta told us everyone had given up on her, except for her teacher.
These young people had been given a second chance. They were helped by local organizations which provided comprehensive services like skills training, relevant education, and wellness programs. It’s made all the difference, putting them back on the pathway towards employment and a lifelong identity as a responsible, productive member of the community.
Yet, not everyone facing similar hurdles is aware these services exist or how they can enroll. One of the opportunities the Council has identified and will recommend to President Obama is how communities can maximize current social media strategies and formats to better communicate and dialogue directly with the youth most in need, promoting awareness and access to the resources to empower themselves.
The mission of the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation is to change our community one soul at a time. It’s an objective we can all follow. It’s not just about what one business or one person can do — it’s about all of us, working together across the artificial lines that separate government from business and from community-based organizations and individual citizens, to find ways to do more with less.
And we can’t wait. As President Obama said, “this is an all-hands-on-deck moment.” The stakes are high, but if we go all in, this is one bet on America’s future, our youth, we can’t afford to lose.
