Last night at the West Virginia Greenbrier Golf Classic Bon Jovi Performed in front of a massive crowd. The heat of the day hit high digits. At one point after the band had their sound check Jon Bon Jovi had bought water for the crowd. He had also delayed the start of the performance from 8 p.m. (no warm up act) until 8:45 p.m. so let things cool off knowing full well that the lights and the people would raise the temperature. (For any of us who have ever been to a Jovi concert we know this is  very true!) From the tweets I experienced last night and the amount I am still going through this morning not to mention show video and my personal favorite the Richie Cam. (Check it out on You Tube.) I do know that Richie Sambora has seen it.

Bon Jovi to rock annual Quebec City festival July 9

For Matt Bongiovi, keeper of JBJ Backstage and just about everything that is Bon Jovi when it comes to social networking, hell hath no fury like a rock band on hiatus that refuses to really enjoy downtime and take a load off.
Such is the case with his brother’s juggernaut of a nom de plume, Bon Jovi.
See, these guys are supposed to be kicking back and enjoying la vida buena; but what are they doing instead?
Running around like headless chickens working on solo projects here, a charity appearance there, a benefit show, a beachfront show, laying tracks for a new band record.

Talk about taking one for the team!
Matt’s never-ending nightmare is JoviNation’s round-the-clock obsession, and fans around the world are amped to hear that Bon Jovi (along with Aerosmith), will be headlining a full show at the Festival D’Ete De Quebec in Quebec City on July 9th.
Think Bamboozle on steroids, or the New Meadowlands shows to the tenth power; this band is gonna shake and quake and bring everything but the tsunami.
As reported on the band’s web site BonJovi.com, “Bon Jovi will be performing at Festival D’Ete’ Quebec on the plains of Abraham in Quebec City for a full headlining set of all the hits on July 9th, 2012”.
What exactly are Abraham’s Plains and does he know Bon Jovi will be touching down there and ripping them up?
Once an enormous patch of grazing land back in the early 1700’s, the plains became site of the famous Battle of the Plains of Abraham, which took place on the very spot Bon Jovi will be performing in September, 1759.
Still confused?
Think of the French trying to throw the British out in similar manner as to how America was born, and you come close to what eventually became known as the Seven Years War was.
Today over 200 years later, the battlefield has been turned into a park visited annually by 4 million people for a variety of outdoor activities.
In its 45th year, the festival runs from July 5-15 and will include performances by Aerosmith, Johnny Hallyday, Metric, The Offspring, and LMFAO among many more.
Bon Jovi’s appearance marks the first time the band will visit Quebec City since 2001, and fans and festival organizers alike are certain to be mesmerized by an over-powering show bursting at the seams with all of their biggest hits.
“A master stroke –Bon Jovi!”, festival organizers said in a release. “The U.S. Ambassadors of Rock N’ Roll come to Quebec City at last for their only show in Canada. Their appearances here are rare”.
Voulez vous coucher Bon Jovi is gonna kick ass and take names?

Right side of Wrong - Bon Jovi Clip

Sad to say I never gave this song the chance it so rightly deserves. My bad. Take a listen. This is part of what makes Bon Jovi who they are. Masters at storytelling through song.

The Bon Jovi Effect.

Bon Jovi headlining the Bamboozle on the beach in Asbury Park.           Jon Bon Jovi: Bigger than Bamboozle?
Folks, it’s not just another show.
“It’s going to be the ultimate Bon Jovi experience,” said Bon Jovi fan Denise Balestracci, 51, of Colonia. “It’s literally on the boardwalk. It’s so Jersey .”
Bon Jovi — Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, David Bryan, Tico Torres plus touring members Bobby Bandiera and Hugh McDonald — are set to close this year’s edition of the Bamboozle festival, which moved back to Asbury Park after a several year absence, on Sunday evening. The stage, located on the north end of the boardwalk, will span the boardwalk and the beach.
“Bon Jovi is an iconic New Jersey performer so it made a lot of sense to have him come play for us this year,’ said Christian McKnight, talent buyer for Live Nation who has worked on Bamboozle since its inception.
If you’re wondering why Bon Jovi is playing the Bamboozle, well, the festival has moved away from the pop-punk it built its name on in the mid ’00s. The fest has featured former Bon Jovi contemporaries like Bret Michaels of Poison and Motely Crue in the past.
“What happened is when the festival grew and got bigger, the kind of people who would come to the festival changed — it wasn’t just emo kids or pop-punk kids, it became all facets of life,” McKnight said. “We wanted to give kids a chance to see a band they wouldn’t normally see ... a fan of Linkin Park wouldn’t normally see a Bret Michaels or MC Hammer, that’s kind of been the purpose of the Bamboozle, it’s always unexpected — you never know what you’re going to see.”
Yet, a Bon Jovi show on the boardwalk makes sense in a way. The staging evokes memories of the city’s WNEW radio station concerts, formerly held next to the casino through the late ’80s and early ’90s. In 1985, Bon Jovi filmed the video for the song “In and Out of Love” on another Jersey boardwalk — the one in Seaside Heights.
Sunday’s show takes place, of course, in Asbury Park, where Jon Bon Jovi and his bandmates from Bon Jovi and pre-Bon Jovi bands bands like the Atlantic City Expressway, or ACE, played gigs at the Stone Pony and Fast Lane. The guys are from towns just north of the city: Sayreville, Woodbridge, Perth Amboy and Edison.
“He was relatively an outsider in Asbury Park ,” said former Asbury Park Press music writer Matty Karas. “The city was all about (Bruce) Springsteen, Southside Johnny and John Eddie, and that old ‘60s soul rock. Bon Jovi was not a part of that — they were metal and they’ weren’t thought of as part of the Asbury Park scene.”
Yet, over time, the Bon Jovi sound has moved more toward the bluesy Sound of Asbury Park and the definition of the city’s music has become less rigid. Now, Bon Jovi is as synonymous with Asbury Park as Springsteen. Off stage, members of the band have shown themselves to be talented beyond rock ‘n’ roll. Bryan won a couple of Tony Awards for the musical Memphis , which he co-wrote, and Jon Bon Jovi works toward the eradication of hunger and homelessness through his Soul Foundation and Soul Kitchen restaurant in Red Bank. He’s also a member of the White House Council for Community Solutions.
With the hair metal days far away in the rear view mirror, Bon Jovi has assumed a new role in the culture. The band is a not-so-guilty-pleasure to fans across the musical spectrum. So much so that the words “Bon Jovi” have become a perpetual meme on Twitter, with references to the band popping up every minute or so.
“Awesomeness is your best friend calling you from the Vegas Bon Jovi concert so you can hear the man you’ve been in love w/ since age 2 sing,” reads one tweet.
“Bon Jovi hurts my head BUT I DON’T CARE!!” says another.
See you in the sand at sundown.
“It’s going to be a true Jersey experience,” Balestracci said. “Classic music and the beach go hand in hand.”

Hugh McDonald: the man behind the Bon Jovi bass

We never hear about Hugh so when I saw this article there was no question it would make it to the blog today.....

Hugh McDonald: the man behind the Bon Jovi bass

Hugh McDonald has to be the most humble musician in rock n' roll.

He is the rhythmic definition of rock and roll cool: nary a beat is there that he can’t keep, from the driving bass line of “Keep The Faith” or the sensual hip sway tub thumping of “One Wild Night”. Cool and confident, content to be the most Unfamous Unofficial band member of New Jersey’s own Bon Jovi. He’s low key and exudes class; indeed, bassist Hugh McDonald is the ultimate hired gun.

A native of Philadelphia, McDonald has been dealing heartbeat bass grooves for Bon Jovi since the band’s inception. He played bass on the original demo tape for “Runaway”, and was a member of The All-Star Review, the collection of studio musicians who crafted “Bon Jovi”, the band’s debut LP.

Other players included guitarist Tim Pierce, keyboardist Roy Bittan (of the E Street Band), drummer Frankie LaRocka, and singers David Grahmme and Mick Seeley.

Though not originally recruited to play bass for the final lineup that would become Bon Jovi---Richie Sabora on guitar, David Bryan on keyboards, Alec Jon Such on bass and Tico Torres on drums---McDonald replaced Jon Such when he left the band after the release of 1994’s "Crossroad" album.

In addition to playing on numerous Bon Jovi studio albums and touring extensively around the world with the band, McDonald was also a member of the Dave Bromberg Band, and has recorded with Alice Cooper, Willie Nelson, Richie Sambora, Steve Goodman, Ringo Starr, Jon Bon Jovi, Lita Ford, Michael Bolton, Cher, and Ricky Martin among others.

Laid back and with cool looks that make him look like he and actor James Spader were separated at birth, McDonald must be incredibly secure in his own talent and place in the universe to not push the issue of ‘official membership’ in Bon Jovi.

At times he must certainly feel like the Carlo character from The Godfather---the one who marries Michael Corleone’s sister Connie---he’s in the family, but technically he’s not.

“Give him a decent living, but don’t ever let him in on the family’s business” is a Vito Corleone quote that refers to Carlo, but could just as easily have been uttered by Jon Bon Jovi.

Like a mafia family protecting the original inner circle, the band members never ‘officially’ replaced Jon Such; rather, they filled their need by simply hiring another session musician, a known quantity, hard worker, and someone who wouldn’t whine about not being ‘with the band’.

Official or not, Hugh McDonald is no fool.

In a music industry that chews up and spits out acts new and old as fast as the cultural whims shift the style and nature of the entertainment, Bon Jovi has endured far longer than anyone on MTV or FM radio could have predicted back when they hit the scene in 1983.

Hell, most musicians are glad if they can get a paying gig or two; McDonald has had a pretty good run with a steady job in one of the world’s best bands for decades.

Nor is McDonald one-dimensional.

His Discography is nothing short of a 'Who’s Who' of incredible talent he has played with during the course of his career, and clearly serves as an official set of papers for a blue-blood musical pedigree that requires nothing but to play for the love of music; to feel the incidental weight of a Carvin bass slung high on a hip and rumbling low against a tummy while lending drive to a universe of music that knows no bounds nor in which it can be contained.

Good work if you can find it, and Hugh McDonald has, and does!
